Coffee Break: How To Design An Office Break Room That Will Keep Your Employees Happy

How would your employees describe the break room at your office? Is it inviting and inspiring or would your employees rather avoid the break room altogether and head to the local coffee shop across the street? Designing a break room that is attractive and inviting is one way to show your employees you care and will help to make their workday a little more pleasant.

Let the popular coffee shops be your guide

Eliminate banquet style table set-ups and use several round tables with two to four chairs per table. This provides a more relaxing atmosphere and will make it easier for workers to chat with co-workers during breaks or lunchtime. Comfortable chairs are a luxury your workers will appreciate.

Avoid having music in the break room, since it's impossible to please everyone when it comes to music style. Most employees have their own playlists on their smart phones or tablets and can listen through headphones if desired.

Get a good beverage system

If your coffee maker is outdated, upgrade to a single serve system that uses k cups. These machines are a must have for busy offices and can save space, as you won't need a separate brewing machine for tea or hot chocolate lovers. Whether your employers want to make a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast, try a gourmet coffee blend, or heat water for a cup of instant soup, single serve brewers can handle the task.

Purchase a rack for holding a wide variety of k cup flavors. A good coffee selection to have on hand is special flavored k cups, dark roast varieties, famous coffee shop brands, and both caffeinated and decaf types. You should have black, green, and herbal tea k cups and hot chocolate k cups in sugar and sugar-free varieties.

Keeping a supply of sweeteners and creamers available is important. Sugar and sugar-free sweeteners in individual packets are better than a sugar bowl in office settings for health reasons. The same goes for creamers. Use disposable beverage cups or request that employees bring their own cups to use.

Keep it clean

It can be difficult to maintain a clean environment, especially in larger offices where dozens of employees are using the area. However, finding a way to keep the area clean will go a long way towards employee morale. Encourage everyone to clean up after themselves or designate a person to oversee cleanup daily or weekly.

Microwaves and refrigerators

Microwaves and refrigerators should be maintained in good working condition. Make sure to have the refrigerator tested on a regular basis to ensure it is staying at the correct temperature provided in the manufacturer's guidelines. Microwaves should be cleaned regularly to avoid bacteria growth.

Going to work each day may not be the favorite thing on your employees' minds when their alarm goes off in the morning. However, you can make their day a little better by designing a break room that is well stocked with their favorite beverages, is clean, and gives them a place to enjoy a much-deserved break during their busy day.
