3 Ways To Cater Your Event Food To Your Guests' Allergies

With food allergies on the rise, this makes it necessary to adjust your event menu so that it suits a variety of potential dietary restrictions. When you're booking your party catering, it's important to keep your guests' allergies in mind so that they don't become sick or experience an allergic reaction at your event. Check out a few ways to adjust your event's food so that it adheres to your guests' dietary restrictions.

1. Gather Information About Allergies Prior to the Event

Whenever possible, gather information regarding your guests' allergies before your event date. When you send out the invitation for your event, you can include a section on the RSVP card for guests to report any dietary restrictions or you might include a phone number or email address so that guests can contact you about their food allergies.

If you can determine what kind of allergies you're dealing with, you can adjust the menu to their needs. For example, if a large number of guests have shellfish allergies, you'll want to see that you have an alternative dish or dishes if shellfish are on your event menu.

For some events, you might not have the option to inquire about food allergies ahead of time. In these instances, try to have at least one main course, side dish, and dessert that's as allergy-friendly as possible. Or, you might separate the components for a dish so that guests can customize their plates to their needs. A pasta bar, baked potato bar, or salad bar are all potential allergy-friendly options.

2. Make Sure Your Catering Company Can Accommodate Food Allergies

When interviewing potential catering companies, look for an experienced company that knows the correct procedures to account for food allergies. It isn't sufficient for your catering crew to just provide dishes that don't contain problematic allergens.

You also need to check that the party catering company knows what steps are vital to prevent cross-contamination during the cooking process. Allergy-free dishes can't be prepared on the same surfaces or with the same unwashed utensils as dishes that contain allergies. During your event, the allergy-friendly dishes must have their own serving equipment so that contamination doesn't occur.

3. Clearly Label What a Dish Contains

Sometimes, it's hard to identify what's in a dish by glancing at it. A dish might look like it doesn't contain dairy or gluten, but it's possible for these items to be hidden or for these dishes to contain traces of these ingredients due to the cooking process. Check that every dish has a card or description in an easy-to-read location that identifies exactly what's in the dish and whether cross-contamination is possible.
